It follows the life of a famous musician who sacrifices everything for his daughter, and guides her towards an artistic career. The movie begins at the family home in Mumbai every day is like every other day. He (Rajesh Khanna) and his wife (Saira Banu) sit down to eat their breakfast together and then go about their lives. Rajesh is the legendary singer in the film industry and has sung millions of songs in Hindi film music. When his daughter Megha (Katrina Kaif) comes into the picture she becomes obsessed with wanting to become a singer. Her mother (Rekha) becomes furious and forbids her from singing. Megha then runs away from home and goes into hiding with a childhood friend (Nimrat Kaur) and begins to sing at theaters around the city to make a living. This movie is based on Rajesh Khanna's real life; Rajesh was too busy to spend time with his family and became entangled in work and the world of music. His wife Rekha (Saira Banu) was determined that his career should not suffer any harm as she thought he would be able to use the money made during those years for other things such as their daughter Megha's education, as well as that of their son. Karan Johar, the director of the film says that he based the film on his real life where he "fell in love with Rekha and tried to understand her". He also said, "Our real life story is very similar to what we have shown in this film. I hope we have managed to show Rajesh and Rekha's love and respect for each other." He added: "I always wanted to do a film like this. I was trying to understand Rekha and her relationship with Jagdish (Rajesh Khanna). I wanted them to be devoted to each other. I wanted to show the way they lived and got along." In an interview after the film's release, Johar also said that he fell in love with Rekha at first sight, especially after knowing how she handled her husband. He thought "Rekha was very clever and had a great sense of discretion. I know she would have never wanted to be seen as an assistant. She was loving and soft-spoken, not at all like the characters she played on the screen." Later he was disappointed over Rekha's behavior in real life; "I started to know Rekha only when our film came out. I saw that even then she was not like what you see on screen. She seemed trapped by her husband. cfa1e77820
